Paramount Games has released the Avatar State update for Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game on Xbox Series X and Series S, marking the largest content and balance overhaul the game has received since its launch earlier this year. The update delivers widespread changes affecting every fighter, revamped menus and interfaces, new gameplay modes, and redesigned versions of two key characters: Avatar Aang and Nightmare Korra.
The patch is available now and significantly alters how the title plays, aiming to enhance fairness and variety in competitive play. It rebalances all 12 fighters, drawn from both the Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra series, refining movesets and adjusting abilities for a more even playing field. These adjustments follow months of player feedback and developer observation since the game’s release.
Revamped Fighters and Visual Overhaul
Central to the update are the fully reimagined versions of Avatar Aang and Nightmare Korra, both redesigned with new artwork, animations, and unique attack patterns. Studio Art Director Giancarlo Montalbano and the team explained that Avatar Aang’s new iteration channels his iconic Avatar State moments from the animated series, emphasising precision and raw elemental power. His lighting design is distinct within the game, with underlighting used to convey a commanding presence. His signature Level 4 super move includes a cameo by Avatar Roku, drawn directly from the show’s Winter Solstice storyline.
Nightmare Korra contrasts with Aang’s commanding stance through a more elusive and ghostly design. Inspired by Korra’s berserk state and her struggle during the Korra Alone episode, this version features twin wrist chains and dramatic visual effects including mercury-like elements in her super moves. Her Final Technique, Eternal Nightmare, was noted for its striking animation and impact on matches.
Gameplay Improvements and New Modes
In addition to aesthetic updates, the patch introduces Ranked Mode 2.0, refreshed tutorials, Combo Trials, and Story Mode+ with difficulty settings, broadening how players can engage with the game’s systems. Story stages are now playable in Versus mode, providing more diversity in match settings.
The combat system adjustments affect notable characters such as Azula, whose Ambition’s Spark move now includes an improved tracking mechanic with a larger detonation hitbox that can be flow cancelled for combo potential. Sokka’s sword attacks have new interactions unlocking a boomerang toss after sufficient successful hits, adding depth to his tactical options during fights.
The full patch notes detailing every character’s changes and other quality-of-life improvements have been posted by Paramount Games alongside the patch release.
The Avatar State update is exclusive to Xbox Series X and Series S platforms at launch, continuing the game’s focus on next-gen hardware capabilities and online competitive play.
