Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Year Two Adds Duel Mode, New Characters and Sega Consoles Pack

Sega has rolled out Year Two content for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, introducing new gameplay features, characters, and a vehicle pack inspired by classic Sega consoles. This update expands the game’s modes and customization options, impacting players across all available platforms.

Among the headline additions is Duel Mode, which shifts focus from the standard 12-player races to one-on-one competition. According to the development team, Duel Mode emphasises strategic item use and distance management between opponents, offering a distinct racing experience.

New Gadgets and the Super Slot Enhance Customisation

The Year Two update also adds new gadgets and introduces the Super Slot, a dedicated slot for single-slot gadgets that amplifies their effects. This change provides players with more ways to personalise their play style through enhanced combinations during races.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds already allows players to develop individual racing approaches, and these new features aim to deepen that gameplay complexity. The update also includes new characters and tracks, further broadening the game’s roster and courses.

Sega Consoles Pack Brings Nostalgic Vehicles

A notable part of Year Two is the Sega Consoles Pack, which features three vehicles designed around the aesthetics of Sega’s historic hardware. These vehicles incorporate styling cues from the Dreamcast, Genesis, and Sega Saturn, including colours, shapes and button layouts, reimagined as racing machines rather than direct hardware replicas.

The development team highlighted that each vehicle reflects its console counterpart while fitting within the game’s mechanics, such as the front-and-rear combination system. For example, the Dreamcast vehicle recreates its iconic Visual Memory Unit (VMU), and the Genesis-inspired car named Genesis Tower US required careful design to avoid obscuring characters during gameplay.

This vehicle pack first appeared online as an April Fool’s joke but has now been formally released as part of the Digital Deluxe Edition and Season Pass Two content.

Prices for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds were permanently reduced with the update. The Standard Edition is available for $39.99 USD, while the Digital Deluxe Edition and Year Two Digital Deluxe Edition are priced at $59.99 USD each, available now on the PlayStation Store and other platforms.
